Dr. Lisbeth Skibsted on 3Shape's TRIOS scanner

After owning her own Denmark practice for 21 years, Dr. Lisbeth Skibsted joined a large medical practice situated in a health care building in Denmark. The complex includes 26 medical doctors, general practices, 12 physicians, chiropractors, a wide range of specialists, and her dental practice with 3 dentists, 2 hygienists and other staff.

With a special interest in implants and cosmetics, Dr. Skibsted is always looking to learn about new techniques and new technologies.

When did you first learn about the 3Shape TRIOS scanner?
I am very interested in new technology, and when I heard about the possibility to make crowns and veneers and bridges without conventional impressions I started to investigate in the market. I looked at several scanners and finally made my decision. The TRIOS scanner fulfilled all my expectations. I made the decision that it would not be effective for my practice to do crowns in-house. I calculated my cost-benefit, and decided not to have a mini-lab in my practice.
I have used the TRIOS scanner since January 2012 and have made more than 200 cases. I find it very easy to use and from the very first day I’ve used it on every case. It did not take me any more time than a conventional impression from start, and after doing about 20 cases it became a time-saver. The scanning time for a single unit case is less than 2 minutes and less for the antagonist.

What are some benefits this scanner provides to clinicians and patients?
It is very easy to use. You do not have to apply scanning powder, and if the scan is not perfectly correct, you just erase the part you want to rescan on the screen with your finger, and re-scan the small area. It automatically inserts the new scan in correct position, which is amazing.
You never have to start from the beginning again. For complex cases it is a huge advantage. It is possible to scan 2 or 3 teeth at first, and then dry the next section, scan again and so on, until every tooth stands perfectly on the screen. This is an easy way to make a perfect result.
My lab tech is very happy working with the 3Shape TRIOS. He makes e.max single crowns without models, and for more complex cases, he’ll make a model first. We have not had any returns to the lab because of a poor fit. It is very precise.
The patients are very satisfied, as they do not like impression material. They are impressed by the new technology.

Would you recommend TRIOS to a colleague and why?
I would recommend the TRIOS scanner to my colleagues who want to move forward in digital dentistry. It is easy and it is fun to work with the newest technologies. It moves your practice one level up. Also, your patients will love it. And it is convenient for you to show your patients the procedures on the screen. Most patients like good information, and it is easy for them to imagine that this will be more accurate than conventional impressions.

From production labs to digital service labs

Always farsighted, 3Shape explores the future dental industry by addressing the question: “What comes after Digitization?” Mass-digitization of the dental lab industry is already underway and, in our previous articles, we argue that labs need to get on the digital bandwagon as soon as possible in order to stay competitive. But what happens after all labs are digitized – and being digital is no longer the deciding differentiator that keeps a lab’s business ahead of its competitors?

Mass digitization of the lab industry is inevitable
3Shape foresees a future in which non-digital labs will have closed down, except for those few that manage to hang on to some of their customers due to long-term relationships. Some non-digital labs may survive by positioning themselves niche areas. But the main industry drivers will be large, midsized, and even smaller digital labs with efficient CAD/CAM systems.

New competition rules
With all contenders in the ring being digital, many labs will have similar offerings and labs, at least those with top-of-the-market CAD/CAM systems, will basically be working with comparative possibilities in terms of production speed, available materials, quality, and the range of indications they can offer. Inevitably the dental lab market will lean more and more towards becoming a buyer’s market, where dentists can easily shop around and switch providers without suffering major consequences. Therefore, digital labs will need to develop new differentiators – business models that are strong enough to maintain customer loyalty, win new clients and take the lead in their local markets.

From Production lab to Service lab
Many labs today are looked upon as production centers, delivering orders of dental restorations to their client base of dentists. Embracing CAD/CAM surely adds production speed, improved quality and more indications. But in a massively digital market, these improvements although significant, will not by themselves change the perception of the lab’s role as yet another efficient production center among many others. Labs need to move from being production-only labs to become service-provider labs – while taking advantage of their digital technologies to get there. To put it shortly, labs that want to stand out need to shift focus, redefine their function for dentists, and create a new place for themselves in the value chain.

Labs will require tools that make possible new service opportunities as supplements to restoration production. The best CAD/CAM providers will target their innovation and solutions to provide such tools to labs. Frequently Asked Questions - 3Shape TRIOS

 

Q: Spray-free
A: Yes. Scans tooth as well as metals without any contrast powder or spray!

Q: Does the tip fog up when scanning intraoral?
A: Of course just like any intraoral camera, but this can be fully addressed and managed by using dedicated pre-heating tip to heat the scan tip, ensure the oral cavity is isolated and dry as you would with any conventional impression, and using the common “inhale-through-mouth-exhale–through-nose” principle.

Q: What about scanning Blood and Saliva?
A: Retraction technique for proper tissue deflection and hemostasis is recommended to achieve any optimal impression. Using a soft/hard tissue laser, retraction cord, expasyl, or even a hemostatic agent like superoxoyl can assist in maintaining an ideal environment.
When it comes to saliva it is ideal to have a saliva ejector handy to avoid pooling. Both contaminants should be removed before and during scanning. Workflow is consistent when capturing a conventional or digital impression.

Q: Can you scan Sub-gingiva preparations?
A: Yes! Subgingival areas are fully scannable. Just expose the margin line/preparation as for conventional impression making (laser, cord, hemostatic agent -refer to above question please)

Q: Can you scan a complete arch and palatal area?
A: Yes! Completely possible ( indications are currently limited to max. 5-unit bridges)

Q: What about Scan speed?
A: Ultra Fast! On average 3 – 8 minutes for complete case which includes Upper/Lower/Bite scans. It really depends on the workflow experience and size of restoration(s).

A: By an intraoral buccal scan, capturing the exact bite (not by scanning impression/Index)

A: No, as our goal was to keep the TRIOS Light and maneuverable. TRIOS offers extremely fast boot-up (app. 30 sec), and recovery of ongoing scan data in case of a power outage.

Q: What is the File-Size/Transmission?
A: 2 – 10MB, transferred to the lab of your choice via FTP (To TRIOS Inbox/DS) (Within a matter of mintues!!)

Q: Can the screen be operated with gloves on?
A: Yes, and by the scan wand itself (wii functionality - rotate and move the digital image on the screed with the wand!)
The Screen can be cleaned using normal clinical disinfection materials.

Q: Wireless keyboard and Mouse?
A: Yes, by Bluetooth connectivity

Q: Interface to clinic/patient management software?
A: Yes interface protocol available. Requires integration. Remote data entry inabled for all TRIOS units with Client Sharing function

Q: Interface to 3rd party CAD/CAM?
