3Shape TRIOS: Advancements in Digital Dentistry

We are living in a time of convenience and easy of use. Almost everything is at our finger tips with the use of a smart phone. Times are changing and certain aspects of life have been transformed to be faster, easier, better. Communication has changed the way we gather data has changed, many workflows have changed ... so what is the change?

Digitization and Automation; and it is all around us!

3Shape TRIOS Communicate Screen Shot

It is quite clear what the future of our industry will be, we all know its coming and most of us acknowledge that it is already here. Digital Dentistry is at the forefront, it has been banging down the doors of dental labs world wide for quite sometime now. CAD/CAM technology is the way of the future so where does that leave the Dentist?
Well there is great news and then there is more great news!
As a Dentist that offers Digital Technology in office you open many different avenues to you, your team, your business, and your patients. With a Digital Impression solution the impressioning process becomes so much more than that 'icky goop' that you stick in your patients mouth and have them bite on for 3-7 minutes. The Digital Impression is a diagnostic tool, an educational presentation, a way to track and review changes in the mouth, a way to get your patients more involved and have a higher level of understanding which in turn results in a higher level of treatment acceptance. They will be able to see how their teeth come together in occlusion rather than wonder and try to imagine what you mean when you state their bite is off or crossed or class III.
What else does digitization and automation in the dental office mean ... I'm glad you asked. It means: faster trunarounds, exceptional patient care, improved patient experiences and higher treatment acceptance, material flexibility with lab expertise and quality restorations, streamlined workflows for your team, less material to set up means less time wasted, reduced costs mean increased production ... but how?

Here is how:

The 3Shape TRIOS 2nd Generation Digital Impression Solution for Dental Restorative and Orthodontic Indications
  • No Click Fees, Case Fees, or Back End Fees to you or your Dental Lab
  • No Powder, No Spray
  • No 3rd party interference - your lab is your choice! (Open Architecture)
  • Ultrafast Advanced Scanning Technology - 3000 2D images per second to create accurate 3D Image with up to 1000 3D images - not from interpolated artificial images/surfaces
  • Smart Tool Technology - the TRIOS highlights areas that you may have missed and prompts you to move forward. (also upload photos and attachments to the order form)
  • Custom Color Tool - an easy way to provide descriptive detail highlighting specific areas that showcases multi-tones and variations throughout the tooth structure for life like aesthetics
  • Automatic Heater Tip - no harsh cool air blowing causing sensitivity to surrounding dentition
  • Autoclavable and reusable scan tips
  • Sleek and sophisticated Design - will compliment any space
  • Light weight for comfort and maneuverability - ergonomically designed with you in mind
  • Simple Plug and Go set up
The 3Shape TRIOS will Save you Money!
Digitization and automation reduces costs: save on impression material, trays, tips, stone to pour models, shipping, but mostly time! Saving time will save you money! Save on storage and space by scanning in your models too! Have a CAD inspired workflow to increase production. Prep and walk away and let your CDA or Hygienist take care of it for you while you maximize your time and production in another operatory!

The 3Shape TRIOS will Accelerate Turnaround Times!
This is quite simple. An impression from the 3Shape TRIOS Digital Impression Solution is accessible faster due to the open digital format of the STL. As a matter of fact the digital impression is sent directly to the lab within a matter of minutes. 3Shape has taken time into account when they thought this one through; the easier the process is the faster it becomes meaning that the direct to lab approach with the TRIOS is unlike no other. The digital impression that was taken chairside can be immediately accepted (within minutes) into the 3Shape CAD software for work to be completed on either an indirect restorative restoration or an orthodontic appliance. It really is that easy!
Check out the link for a 3 day turnaround case which included 1 day of shipping (imagine the possibilities with a local lab):http://www.kastlemills.com/insert-indriect-restorations-scanned-3shape-trios-canada/

The 3Shape TRIOS is Streamlined and Simplified
Faster. Easier. Better. For you and your team! The TRIOS Digital Impression solution will eliminate many steps in taking a traditional impression. Say good bye to tray selection, dispensing and set up of materials, (the elimination of those 2 steps for me as a CDA is very appealing) gaging patients, disinfection and shipping of impressions, or pouring of models all of which are susceptible to distortion. The 3Shape TRIOS does eliminate patient gagging during impression taking. TRUST ME ... I was tested on this one a few times with my in office demos!
Digital files and the 3Shape Communicate function allow for rapid communication with the laboratory, it's like having your lab tech in house! Not to mention the digital impression is a record that will not distort, or become damaged over time. In any case digitization removes several steps from the process. It is a simple as take a scan and send to the lab, the lab accepts, designs, and fabricates your models and restoration from a beautiful open file format called the STL.

Material Flexibility and Lab Expertise
With a digitized and automated workflow from an open architecture system (3Shape TRIOS) you have access to unlimited choices for product material choices and product manufacturing options. There is no 3rd party integration for post processing or data marking. It is you and the lab of your choice! Nothing changes aside from the method of capture and transport of the impression - your lab, and established workflow and existing relationship - flexibility and choice of material, expedited turnaround times with lab skill, knowledge, quality and expertise.
There is no doubt in my mind that this technology will increase productivity, streamline workflows, and make any dental team more efficient. So why not find out for yourself and call for a quote today!

Interesting read: Breath analysis could diagnose colorectal cancer

breath analysis and colon cancer

BARI, Italy: Colorectal cancer, commonly known as colon cancer or bowel cancer, has one of the highest mortality rates of all cancer types. Yet no effective screening tool exists for the detection of this cancer. Italian researchers have now investigated a way to diagnose colorectal cancer by testing patients’ breath for chemicals linked to the disease.
In their study, researchers from the University of Bari investigated two groups of participants, 37 patients with diagnosed colorectal cancer and 41 healthy controls. Their exhaled breath was collected in a gas-sampling bag and evaluated for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could be red flags for cancer. According to the researchers, tumour growth involves several metabolic changes, leading to the production of specific compounds that can be detected in exhaled breath and thus analysis of the VOCs linked to cancer is a new frontier in cancer screening.
The researchers identified 15 of the 58 specific VOCs that are associated with colorectal cancer, and were able to distinguish with over 75 per cent accuracy which patients had cancer and which were healthy. Among the cancer patients, the team correctly identified 19 as having colorectal tumours.
“Breath VOC analysis appears to have potential clinical application in colorectal cancer screening, although further studies are required to confirm its reliability in heterogeneous clinical settings,” the researchers concluded.
The study, titled “Exhaled volatile organic compounds identify patients with colorectal cancer”, was published online ahead of print in the British Journal of Surgery.

Will digital impressions become a standard of care?

With all the Advantages of digital impressions and with the emergence on the 2nd generation of Intraoral Scanners is now the time that the dental landscape transitions to digital?

With most dental labs thinking of purchasing an open scanner or have already purchased an open scanner - the dental `grid' is now here to support any dentist that decides to move to an intraoral impression taking device.
Back in 2010 we believe this digital dental infrastructure was just emerging to support clinicians, now in 2012 it's here ready and waiting on dentists to make the transition into digital.
This is a great article from AEGIS Communications for more on this please read below or click http://www.dentalaegis.com/id/2010/02/question-will-digital-impressions-become-a-standard-of-care

Question: Will digital impressions become a standard of care?

Richard Simonsen, DDS, MS ; Pinhas Adar, MDT, CDT ; Paul Feuerstein, DMD ; Gregg A. Helvey, DDS

Will, or when? The short answer to “will” is of course (in my opinion) a resounding “yes!” But the real question in my mind is “when?”
Digital impressions offer many advantages, more obvious perhaps for the patient initially, but benefits for the dentist and the technician are also highly significant. The technology is here, as can be seen from the ever-expanding array of commercial products available. The cost and the acceptance time needed for the ongoing developing technology will, however, hold back the full adoption of the technology for many practitioners for some time to come.
We have, of course, had digital impressioning with CAD/CAM systems for years. Although pioneering versions are here, what remains to be refined and accepted by the profession is the full-arch impression. The digital full-arch impression would eliminate many steps in making impressions, such as tray selection, dispensing and set up of materials, and disinfection and shipping of impressions that are subject to distortion. Such technology would eliminate patient gagging during impression taking. Digital files would allow for rapid communication with the laboratory, and a record that does not distort or deteriorate with time. “Re-pouring” the impression can be done with equal accuracy to the original. Initial data suggest that remake rates will plunge with digital technology—something that all stakeholders—clinicians, laboratory technicians, and patients—will welcome.

It is, of course, folly to try to predict when the life span of a material or a technique will gain full acceptance, or run its course. While patients and dentists alike will welcome the digitization of the impressioning step, the old ways from compound or rubber base to polyvinyl siloxane will only die out slowly (just look at dental amalgam). It is the younger, more flexible, and adaptive early-adopters who will be enamored by, and who will work to overcome, the early problems with digital impression taking, which will become the standard of care.

Holiday Spirit

I have had quite the week of unfortunate circumstances with remarkable outcomes that really make me feel that the spirit of the season really does exist! One in particular happened on Wednesday as I was traveling from the Kootenay Region of British Columbia back to the Okanagan Valley. I got a flat! It couldn't have happened in a worse location, on an "S" turn along the lake, not an ideal situation but what do you do. Called CAA they said a truck can be out to change my tire within an hour to an hour an a half.... eeek! I thanked the operator for her time and said I'm pretty sure I can do it myself within 30minutes and where I'm stopped I don't exactly want to be waiting long.

Val's Flat Tire

SO ... out comes my 3Shape TRIOS, my luggage, my safety kit, and everything else I had in the back of my vehicle. Open up the compartment, get out my jack, struggle with my spare tire and kick it out of the back ...everything accounted for, I AM READY!
It's funny being a woman 'stranded' so to speak, lots of people slowed down to look, honk and wave as the smile and drive on by but no one looked the least bit concerned or stopped to help. So I set up my jack, jack up my driver's side front end, take off my lug-nuts, and try my hardest to take my tire off the hub ... wouldn't budge ... gave it a few kicks and still wouldn't budge!

As I'm kicking my tire trying to loosen it off the hub and trying not to lose it this beautiful white Audi A4 drives past, brakes, pulls a U Turn and stops. YAY! A wonderful man named Kelly comes to my rescue. He laughed, gave the tire a good kick, got it off my hub, swapped it out and put my spare back on and I was good to go! Not only did Kelly make my day, he also made me more aware of others. Kelly didn't want anything for his time, he just smiled and shook my hand gave me a hug and told me to have a wonderful day.

Now luckily for Kelly during our conversation as he was putting on my spare I was able to find out where he works. Kelly is a foreman at a local lumber mill, Kelly loves to dirt bike, snowboard, and hang out with his friends. And Kelly should be receiving a very nice thank you package at work for taking the time to be aware, be present, and notice his surroundings. To show concern and take time out of his day to stop and help a stranger. I myself will be paying this forward.
Over the Holiday season please take time, be aware not only of your surroundings but of yourself, stay grounded, and pay it forward. Pick up a tab, buy a coffee, give a smile or a hug, let someone pass you or go ahead in line, whatever you do please do it with gratitude, awareness, and peace...a smile wouldn't hurt either.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
